A Cat by Leonard Michaels is the love letter that every cat lover wishes they had written. The simple prose coupled with graceful illustrations by Frances Lerner serve to highlight what every cat person loves about their feline: passion, fun, elegance, depth, with just a touch of arrogance.

It is a short, entertaining book that will surely be treasured by the reader. While this is far from Michaels’s magnum opus, the work will be loved and remembered long after the reader has finished turning the pages. Like a cat strutting away mid-pet, this brief work leaves the reader seeking more. Lerner’s images add character to the short prose and may even inspire some true devotees to bring his simple drawings off the page. Dare I say some of these might be unique and beautiful tattoo designs?

This slim volume is the perfect gift for any cat person, even if that cat person is yourself. On the back cover of the Tin House Books publication, there is a quote summing up Michaels’s book: “While the mystery of the cat can never ultimately be defined, Michaels comes as close as possible to revealing its essence.” To this I would add that Michaels not only reveals this essence, but he revels in it.
